“Saffron Sunrise”

For three miserable months,

the chilling cold has resided

in the marrow of my arthritic bones.

Today,

with the Brittany on leash,

before breakfast,

as the sun rises on our walk,

I unsnap the earflaps of my hat,

loosen the scarf from my face

and feel warm yellow beams

invade my soul karma

as the Brittany stops haphazardly

to smell the green leaves

of emerging snowdrops.
