“Pact”

We’d never had a pact before. We were just kids. So we took it very seriously. We wouldn’t kiss a boy without first telling each other who it was to be. Yet we soon understood we all three, Galina, Sarai and I, wanted to kiss the same boy: Jora. We could have split up the friendship, but we didn’t, and that defined us for our lives. We convinced Jora to marry the three of us. He never stood a chance; we were so convincing. The brief wonderful days of our life followed. When Jora’s step brother Manzu tried to rape Galina and she fought, Manzu killed her. Jora tried to avenge his dead wife and kill Manzu, but Manzu killed Jora. Sarai poisoned Manzu and she and I spat in his choking face. Now it is only Sarai and I. We travel together providing nanny services since we had no chance to have our children. We are closer than sisters. Each in ourselves we know silently that such closeness is hard to find in this world.
