Camellias

Camellias window-dress

garden hedge storefronts

refreshed for spring with

vamped-up lipstick shades

pouting at glossy-leaved

counters as their unfurled

petals waft heady scent

to ogling bees stamens

rumpled by pollen kisses

Montbretias

Lanky border guards

bayonets fixed keep

autumn at bay stand

on watch with flowers

aglow like cigar butts

toking bonfire smoke

lay down arms to hole

up in trenches polish

muddy roots ready

for spring offensives

Kate Meyer-Currey was born in 1969 and moved to Devon in 1973. A varied career in frontline settings has fuelled her interest in gritty urbanism, contrasted with a rural upbringing. Her ADHD also instils a sense of ‘other’ in her life and writing.

She has had over eighty poems published. Her first chapbook ‘County Lines’ (Dancing Girl Press) comes out this Autumn. Her second, ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ (Contraband Books) is due out in February 2022.
